How do you calculate if mining will actually be profitable?

Gather your specific numbers

You need three things: your hardware's hashrate (check manufacturer specs or mining pool stats), your local electricity cost per kilowatt-hour (check your power bill), and the hardware's power consumption in watts. You also need current coin value and mining difficulty—these change constantly, which is why past profits don't guarantee future ones.

Do the calculation

Estimate daily earnings using a mining calculator (search for your specific coin + "mining calculator"). Subtract daily electricity costs: (watts ÷ 1000) × hours per day × your electricity rate = daily cost. The difference is gross profit before pool fees (typically 1–3%).

Account for hidden costs

You'll lose hardware lifespan, possibly pay cooling costs, and may face maintenance issues. Most miners break even or lose money. If a calculator shows $10 daily profit, realistic earnings are probably $5–7 after accounting for variables. Don't assume difficulty and coin price stay constant—they won't.
